What is the American Philatelic Society

With 55,000+ members in more than 110 countries, APS is the largest, nonprofit membership society in the world for stamp collectors. It is supported entirely by membership dues, gifts and the sale of its publications and services. Founded in 1886, the APS is now in its second century of service to stamp collectors and postal historians.

Whether you are a beginning collector or have years of philatelic experience, the American Philatelic Society offers you a number of services and educational opportunities to broaden your personal collection and enhance your special collecting interests! No matter what you collect -- worldwide, the stamps or postal history of a particular country, or by topic -- APS membership will help you gain more enjoyment from your hobby and places you among a well-organized and long-established group of collectors associated for mutual benefit.

Major APS Member Services

In addition to a subscription to The American Philatelist, one of the premier stamp magazines in the world, the major APS services are:

  • APS Sales Circuits -- build your collection from the hundreds of thousands of competitively priced stamps offered by other members, or sell some of your own material. Inventory value exceeds $9,000,000 and most items are priced from less than $1.00 to $5.00.

  • Borrow reference items by mail or in person from the American Philatelic Research Library. More than 100,000 books, catalogues, and magazines are available. Literature searches for a specific philatelic interest and photocopies of articles may be obtained for nominal fees.

  • Save on APS-sponsored stamp insurance -- simple application procedures and extensive coverage you would be hard-pressed to obtain elsewhere at any price! More than 13,000 policies exceeding $800,000,000 of coverage are in force.

  • Learn more about philately at APS seminars or through correspondence courses offered by the APS in cooperation with Penn State -- through direct inquiries to our education department or library -- or through the APS Mentor Program.

  • Obtain authoritative opinions on the genuineness of stamps and covers at member-discount fees. The American Philatelic Expertizing Service(APEX) is operated jointly by the APS and the American Stamp Dealers Association.

  • And Much, Much More.

APS STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

  • to promote stamp collecting for people of all ages,
